Conal Creedon, Writer & Liam Ronayne, City Librarian are June Cork Persons of the Month

CONTRIBUTION TO ARTS AND CULTURE HONOURED. Writer Conal Creedon and City Librarian Liam Ronayne have been named June Cork Persons of the Month. Conal, who contributes to and promotes the arts in Cork and Liam, who has turned our libraries into much more exciting venues and “happening places”, were both honoured for their work over the years. Conal Creedon is the quintessential Cork writer and local arts anorak and shows his love for his native city and county through books, plays, radio, video, theatre, music and “chats down Pana”.

“On social media you’ll see him pictured with friends from the artistic community, with captions describing how one of them had just bumped into so and so in town and he is playing in The Everyman this week, so people should go along to support him,” said Awards organiser Manus O’Callaghan.

“I guess the best way to tell people there’s something happening is by not letting them know you’re telling them,” joked Conal.

Conal has been writer in residence at UCC in the past and his creative work started many years ago when he wrote the radio series for RTE Local Radio ‘Under the Goldie Fish’.  Since then, he has produced a huge body of work from his city centre home.

City Librarian, Liam Ronayne and his team have made a huge impact on the social, cultural and historical scene in Cork, with a series of exhibitions throughout the years.

Under Liam’s stewardship and open-door policy, he has facilitated all things artistic and educational, not least literature and poetry readings and launches. He has helped authors get published, children enjoy music and literature in his library spaces and researchers find old newspapers and city records.

“He just makes things happen and makes libraries a happening place,” said Manus.

“Our June Persons of the Month, Liam and Conal, are also good friends, as you’d expect, but they have proved great friends to the Cork arts scene over the years.”

Conal and Liam’s names now go forward, with the other Persons of the Month chosen this year, for possible selection as Cork Persons of the Year,” said awards organiser Manus O’Callaghan.
