My One Year Work Anniversary at AM O’Sullivan PR!

It’s one year today since I joined AM O’Sullivan PR, a Cork-based communications consultancy with an international reach.  As I reflect on the past year, I’m reminded of the Steve Jobs quote, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.  If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.  Don’t settle.  As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”

After spending several years in Limerick, working in PR and communications, mainly in my own business, Orla Clancy PR (OCPR), I returned to Cork (I’m originally from Clonakilty) last September.  For me, the past year at AM O’Sullivan PR has reinforced the importance of reputation and collaboration in business and drawing on different strengths and expertise.  We are a dynamic team and each one of us has our own unique experiences to offer – internally to our team and externally to our clients.  My work mainly involves media relations, writing, brand building, content creation and management, digital PR and project management across a broad range of sectors.  On any given day, I write and issue press releases to media, coordinate photocalls, oversee videography campaigns, and manage and create content for publications, websites, ezines and social media networks. I direct campaigns for our clients, essentially ensuring that PR and communications plans allow them to manage relationships with their key stakeholders.

During the past year, I have redefined my own personal brand.  When I was working as a sole trader, I often felt that I was wearing too many hats, which was partly down to my reluctance to delegate.  Particularly at the start, I had a desk mentality – only considering my activities to be work related when I was at a client meeting, sitting at my desk or working on my laptop and phone.  During the transition from being self-employed to an employee, I underestimated the value of time spent at networking or training events, or meeting people for coffee to build relationships.  The difference now, in my role as Senior Account Manager at AM O’Sullivan PR, is that I am part of a team and when I am away from my desk, I have colleagues that I can communicate with and rely on back in the office.

When I returned to Cork, my only concern was that I didn’t have an active business network here, as I hadn’t lived or worked in Cork since I graduated. I quickly learned that as the O’Sullivan name has been synonymous with PR in Ireland since 1969, the AM O’Sullivan PR brand opens doors when it comes to building professional connections.  This, coupled with my shift away from a full-time desk mentality, has facilitated several new business relationships and reconnections with existing ones, not only in Cork , but throughout Ireland.  To go back to Steve Jobs’ quote, I believe there are different ways to do what you love and great work always follows.
